What FaceMask Does

A lightweight focus layer for YouTube browsing, built to reduce visual pull without adding platform noise.

Automatic masking

Detects people in thumbnails and overlays them before they steal your attention from the title and topic.

  • Runs on YouTube pages automatically
  • Masks detected people in thumbnails
  • Applies in real time while browsing
  • Designed for a calmer visual feed

Adjustable visuals

Tune the overlay color, opacity, and edge softness to match how strong or subtle the mask should feel.

  • Custom overlay color
  • Opacity slider
  • Soft-edge blur option
  • Works across open YouTube tabs

Fast popup controls

Enable or disable masking, run a quick test, refresh the page, or temporarily remove a single mask when needed.

  • Enable or disable quickly
  • Built-in test button
  • Page reload shortcut
  • Optional quick remove button per thumbnail

Local and lightweight

Processing stays in the browser and the extension is designed to stay small, stable, and dependency-light.

  • All processing stays on-device
  • No data sent to external servers
  • Works after installation without internet
  • Lightweight browser footprint

Documentation

Installation, customization, and troubleshooting notes for a more focused YouTube workflow.

Getting Started

FaceMask is installed locally through Chrome's extension loader. Open chrome://extensions, enable Developer mode, load the unpacked folder, and then refresh YouTube to let masking start.

First run

1. Open YouTube. 2. Refresh the page. 3. Click the FaceMask toolbar icon. 4. Confirm masking is enabled.

What to expect

Default behavior is simple: detected people in thumbnails get a dark mask, settings are saved, and the extension keeps working quietly in the background.
